Vineyard suitability maps (GIS)

1719

Geographical Information System (GIS) vineyard suitabilty maps were produced in the late-nineties and were distributed through 2007 in hardcopy form. We discontinued the distribution of maps in 2008 because the static nature of the maps and their underlying data were obsolete technologies for GIS data presentation.

Funding was provided in 2009 by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services through the Virginia Vineyards Association to Virginia Tech researchers John Boyer and Tony Wolf to develop a new generation of web-based, interactive vineyard suitability maps for Virginia. The project will utilize contemporary data, including soils data, that were not available in 1997 when the original maps were created. We hope to roll out the new maps within the coming year. Please stay tuned.
