Virginia Vineyards Association's Summer Technical Workshop, August 17th, Charlottesville Virginia |
|
The Virginia Vineyards Association's annual summer technical workshop will be held on Monday, August 17th starting at Jefferson Vineyards in the morning and moving to Kluge Estate Vineyards at noon. The program is focused on Grapevine Trunk Diseases and will feature Dr. Philippe Rolshausen of the University of California, and Lucie Morton of Lucie Morton Consulting here in Virginia. Philippe was a graduate student in Doug Gubler's lab at UC Davis and is specialized in identification and management of wood-decaying fungi of grapevines. Philippe visited a number of Virginia vineyards last August and isolated fungal pathogens from vines showing a range of wood-rotting diseases. Viticulturist Lucie Morton has studied wood-decaying fungi and their diseases for more than 10 years, coining the term "black goo" and raising both grower and research interest in avoidance and management of systemic fungal diseases. The workshop will offer a hands-on approach to identifying Eutypa die-back, Botryosphaeria canker, Esca and Esca-like diseases, and will discuss the pathogen biology and management options, including pruning wound protection, vineyard sanitation, and nursery stock inspection. We will be somewhat at the mercy of the weather, but this promises to be a very informative meeting. Please see the attached program and registration forms (pdf file). |
