Dr. Wilkinson's research focuses on identifying new sources of resistance to tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and tobacco cyst nematode (TCN), and to quantitatively characterize inheritance of resistance to TMV and TCN. Her applied research emphasizes the development and release of tobacco cultivars with improved disease resistance and leaf quality characteristics. One flue-cured tobacco cultivar, VA 116, was released in 1990; two sun-cured tobacco cultivars, VA 403 and VA 405, were released in 1991; and two dark fire-cured tobacco cultivars, VA 355 and VA 359, were released in 1999. She has also initiated research in recent years to develop an agronomic management system for production of pharmaceuticals in transgenic tobacco.
